The story of Lorenzini began in 1920. At that time, Antonio Lorenzini and his family lived in Milan, but because of his son Angelo’s illness, the family doctors advised they move to the countryside. The family chose Brianza, a hilly rural area located about 20 miles outside of the city, where traditionally the wealthy Milanese industrialists and their families built their vacation homes. Becoming bored with his convalescence, Angelo and his father decided to start a business based in Brianza, and because of the wealth of inexpensive expert labor in the area, built a factory for the manufacture of men’s shirts. Thus the Lorenzini family shirt business was founded.
Right from the beginning the Lorenzini’s found a domestic market for their high quality men’s shirts, pajamas and nightshirts, and soon started to supply the Italian colonies in Somalia, Libya and Eritrea. In 1920 the class system in Italy was clearly divided between the wealthy and the working class. It was common for wealthy Italian families to have on their domestic staff, one or two individuals (sarti personali), who made by hand their shirts and suits, while the working class usually relied on a relative such as an Aunt or Grandmother to make their apparel. Prior to this time there was no substantial middle class in Italy, and it was by chance – and fortunate timing – that Lorenzini found his biggest market in this burgeoning section of society. With the passing of time, the personal tailor of the wealthy, as well as the family tailor for the poor, had all but vanished, leaving the market wide open for the industrialized garment producer, which over time set the standard for those who could not afford their own tailor.
Every step of the creation of a Lorenzini shirt is performed in the company factory, guaranteeing unparalleled quality control. Computer driven cutting ensures accuracy for matching patterns in the finished garment as well as ensuring consistency of fit. Seven different body-styles are offered with numerous choices for collar, cuff, placket, pocket, front and back pleating and customized detailing. In fact 50 individual stages go into the making of each shirt which takes more than an hour to complete. The Lorenzini mission is to preserve old-world artisan knowledge and apply the expertise to the technological breakthroughs of the ‘new economy’ era, making sure that each Lorenzini shirt is unsurpassed in comfort, quality and style.
Today, Lorenzini shirts can be found worldwide in a selection of the finest men’s outfitters.
